Madame Christine Lagarde - Managing Director of IMF visits and talks to students of National Economics University

On 17th March 2016, , at the Cultural Hall of National Economics University, Madame Christine Lagarde - Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund visited and talked with students of National Economics University. This activity was part of IMF delegation’s official visit headed by Madame Lagarde to Viet Nam to exchange and update the global economic context and to strengthen the relationship between IMF and the Government of Viet Nam.

 

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an international organization of 188 member countries with the responsibility for strengthening the international monetary cooperation, ensuing financial stability, promoting job creation, sustainable economic growth and reducing poverty around the world. As Minister for Finance of the French Government from 2007 - 2011, Madame Christine Lagarde was the first woman to lead finance function of a G8 country.

In July 2011, Christine Lagarde became the 11th Managing Director of the IMF and the first woman to hold that position. During 5 years holding the position, she not only succeeded in mitigating the impact of the European debt crisis but also carried out a number of effective changes to increase the influence of emerging markets at the IMF.

During more than 1 hour, Madame Lagarde gave a talk and discussed with NEU students on two main economic issues: global picture and Vietnam’s present and future focusing on domestic policy priorities and how young people can contribute to Vietnam’s success.

 

On behalf of NEU, Prof. Dr. Tran Tho Dat - President affirmed that the knowledge shared by Madame Lagarde would provide NEU students - the future workforce in economics, business and management sectors of Viet Nam - with insights into the regional and global economy; and give boost to Vietnamese’s efforts contribute to Vietnam’s development goal. Madame Lagarde’s experience and her contagious enthusiasm delivered through her talk and the openly discuss had inspired not only 500 students attending the event but also to thousands Vietnamese people.

 

Prof. Dr. Tran Tho Dat respectfully thanked Madame Lagarde for visiting and giving a talk to NEU students and expressed the hope that the relationship between NEU and IMF would be cemented significantly in the times to come.
